Revolutions Per Minute - Radio from the New York City Democratic Socialists of America

Why the City Council? 2021 and NYC-DSA’s Internal Democracy

Episode Summary

What is the New York City Council and why is it important? What is NYC-DSA? Why is NYC-DSA focused on City Council elections in 2021? How did we decide this? In this episode, we discuss our city’s local legislative body and our chapter’s yearly convention. During our 2019 Convention, we democratically decided to focus on City Council elections in 2021. In our 2020 Convention, which took place remotely on Saturday, August 15th to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we set our priorities for the next year. The resolutions and leadership elections that took place will affect how our chapter operates and our strategy for 2021 elections and the years to come. Thirty-five of the fifty-one seats on the City Council will be open in 2021 due to term limits, giving New Yorkers a rare chance to send a strong message about what we want for our city. NYC-DSA will be assembling a powerful slate of working-class candidates who can provide a socialist vision for New York City.
