The housing justice movement in New York state has made major strides in the last few years. In June 2019, a historic package of rent laws passed in NY state, sending shockwaves through our political landscape and strengthening tenant protections. Yet in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, while millions of tenants have lost income and are unable to pay their rent, our political leadership continues to abdicate their responsibility to the people by refusing to #CancelRent. Organizers in NYC-DSA and our coalition partners are fighting back! Today, we’ll hear from Marcela Mitaynes, a tenant organizer and NYC-DSA endorsed candidate for Assembly District 51 in South Brooklyn, and from comrades organizing rent strikes in their own buildings and neighborhoods, on the critical importance of organizing for tenant power. ¡El pueblo unido, jamás será vencido!
