Something is stirring in the United States of America. Not only is a democratic socialist the frontrunner to become the Democratic Party nominee for president after a landslide victory in the Nevada caucus, but after decades of slumber, labor is in revolt. Rank and File workplace struggles have spread across the country over the past few years. Throughout the episode we’re joined by UAW member and Labor Notes writer Chris Brooks who is organizing with Unite All Workers for Democracy, a national network of rank-and-file UAW members who are organizing to take on their employers, challenge concessions, and clean up the union. Meanwhile in California, academic workers at UC Santa Cruz have been engaged in a wildcat strike to fight for a contract that covers their increasingly high cost of living. This weekend I interviewed Sarah and Veronica, two leading organizers of the strike out West, as their struggle seems poised to spread across the UC university system. Last but not least, we’ll hear from RPM host and special correspondent Lee Ziesche on the National Grid hearings in Albany from earlier today.
